By far my favorite fundraiser of the year is Donut Day. Three times per year, parents of the preschool are required to volunteer in making, boxing and selling fresh donuts for our town’s Farmers’ Market. I love it. I always sign up for the 5:30 am shift so that I can arrive as the farmers are setting up their stands. There is something really beautiful and serene in watching as they bring out their produce, plants and other wares.
The Donuts are a long-standing tradition, and shoppers line up as early as 7 am to get a warm treat fresh from the fryer, a cup of hot coffee and some conversation with other locals. They are entertained by a live bluegrass band as they walk the aisles, and, most importantly, support the community and local farmers. It is a great opportunity to teach the kids about where our food comes from and the importance of giving back. And the donuts are pretty darn delicious too.
